EDUCATION AND CAREER
JOHNSON YOON was born in 1974 in Penang, Malaysia, holds an Honors Degree in Electronics Engineering and Electrical from the University of Liverpool, UK in 1997.
He commenced his career as an Internet Security Engineer, leveraging his expertise to provide comprehensive consultation services to prominent companies across various sectors such as banking, manufacturing, government agencies, starting in 1998.
In 2010, his notable accomplishment came to the fore when the recycling bin designed by YOON and his team, was adopted by Penang and the Selangor State Governments for public use in key areas. Following this commendable success, he embarked on a distinguished career in the Plastics Recycling Industry in 2012.
Presently, YOON serves as the esteemed Managing Director of Shye Guan Plastic Industries Sdn. Bhd. based in Ipoh, Perak, which specializes in the processing of plastic feedstocks into high-quality recycled pellets, contributing to sustainable plastic waste management practices. The company has been operational since 1997.
In 2022, YOON was elected and admitted as an Honorary Fellow of the Association of Professional Managers and Entrepreneurs (APME, UK). This recognition, with the designation FPME (Hon.), acknowledges his professional achievements and notable contributions to the nation and society. APME assists entrepreneurs in enhancing profitability and efficiency to leverage business opportunities in the global economy.
In recognition of his expertise and commitment, JOHNSON YOON has been appointed as a distinguished delegate by Malaysia government to the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) on United Nations Global Plastics Treaty. This esteemed appointment is responsible for developing an international legally binding instrument to address the critical issue of plastic pollution, including its impact on marine environments. Yoon actively assists the senior government officers and negotiators in diplomatic negotiations and collaborative efforts with representatives from around the world to shape policies and strategies aimed at mitigating plastic pollution on a global scale. By participating in the INC, YOON exemplifies Malaysia’s commitment to finding sustainable solutions and demonstrates his invaluable contributions to shaping the future of global plastic agreement.
Moreover, YOON’s expertise is highly sought after, and he frequently shares his invaluable insights as a consultant, speaker, panelist, engaged with government agencies, international organizations, and local institutions to shed light on crucial topics such as the circular economy, the transformative impact of plastics recycling within the Malaysia market, various environmental and recycling forum.
YOON has involved in The Program on the Improvement of the Plastic Waste Management. This groundbreaking initiative, organized by the esteemed ‘Japan Initiative for Marine Environment (JaIME)’ and implemented by the Association for Overseas Technical Cooperation and Sustainable Partnerships, Japan (AOTS), aimed to foster a cohesive understanding of effective plastic waste management practices. Through knowledge sharing of Japan’s expertise and experiences, this program successfully engaged policy-makers, experts and stakeholders in emerging Asian countries.
Currently, YOON pursues his postgraduate studies in Master of Philosophy Mechanical Engineering for Plastic Sustainability and Circular Economy at Universti Technology Malaysia (UTM), future enhancing his expertise in these critical areas of research and practices.
Environmental Responsibility
We are deeply committed to environmental responsibility and sustainability. By recycling plastic scrap into pellets, we significantly reduce the need for virgin plastic production, thereby conserving energy and natural resources. Additionally, our recycling processes comply with all relevant environmental regulations, ensuring minimal emissions and waste generation.
We had been awarded ISO 14001 (Environment Management) in year 2018, to ensure our growing as sustainable organization with environment management at the heart of our operations. This international standard will assist us to reduce environmental impact and reduces waste and energy use with better environment management.
CONTRIBUTION TO MANUFACTURING SECTOR AND SOCIETY
i) YOON has been appointed as an alternate member for the Technical Committee on Circular Economy by the esteemed Department of Standards Malaysia, operating under the Ministry of International Trade and Industry. In this capacity, he actively contributes to the development of national standardization activities, with a particular focus on advancing circular economy.
ii) YOON serves a member of the TASK FORCE established to improve the data collection process for recycling industry players, organized under PERBADANAN PENGURUSAN SISA PEPEJAL DAN PEMBERSIHAN AWAM (SWCorp). As a member of the TASK FORCE, he plays a crucial role in determining methods and processes for collecting and analyzing recycled waste data while proposing strategic recommendations for the overall enhancement of the country’s recycling industry.
iii) Since 2018, YOON has held the position of Secretary General for the Malaysia Plastics Recyclers Association (MPRA). MPRA’s primary objectives include building a sustainable business environment for its members, proactively representing their interests in overcoming challenges in the recycling industry, and collaborating with the government to develop the plastics recycling industry as a vital contributor to Malaysia’s drive for developed nation status.
iv) In 2020, YOON appointed as a Central Committee member of the prestigious Malaysian Plastics Manufacturers Association (MPMA). MPMA, recognized as a progressive trade association, provides effective leadership and delivers quality service to its members and the broader plastics industry. Serving as the official voice of the Malaysian plastics industry, MPMA represents its members in crucial government interactions and spearheads initiatives aimed at fostering industry growth and enabling members to achieve global competitiveness.
v) Since 2015, YOON actively contributes to safety and well-being of his community as a Police Volunteer Reserve (PVR) supporting unit. Collaborating with the Royal Malaysia Police Force, YOON dedicates his time and efforts to assist crimes prevention and the safety of the community.
vi) JOHNSON YOON’s exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to education and community engagement shine through his remarkable tenure as President of the Parents and Teachers Association of SJKC Lick Hung, Subang Jaya (Yang Di-Pertua Persatuan Ibu Bapa and Guru IBG SJK (C) Lick Hung) for three consecutive terms, since 2021. He has been instrumental in creating a nurturing and inclusive learning environment for students, parents, and teachers, leaving a lasting positive impact on the entire school community. YOON’s ability to unite individuals, derive transformative initiatives, and inspire positive change is truly commendable. His steadfast dedication to education and community service serves as an inspiring example for others to follow.
